OFFICE DAY AND COUNTYWIDE BLOOD PRESSURE CLINICS

Blood pressure clinics are held throughout the year at various sites throughout the county, providing easy access for residents to screen for hypertension.  (See following page for a listing of monthly clinics and sites.)  Persons attending blood pressure clinics numbered 1,859 this year.

Regularly scheduled Friday Office Day (and by appointment on other days) is staffed by a community health nurse.  Cholesterol screenings, blood pressure screenings, blood glucose (sugar) monitoring, immunizations, assistance with nail care, tuberculosis monitoring and medication dispensing, lead screening for children 6 month-5 years old, and other services which are patient specific and ordered by their doctor are performed.  Occasionally, the nurse does patient teaching on equipment for the patient’s use in the home, self-medication, or when the patient has been newly diagnosed with an illness they need assistance in understanding or managing.  The program is utilized by a large number of county residents.  No fees are charged for the services.

The influenza (flu) immunization program is a highly utilized one. Normally, the first flu clinic is held in late October.  Over all, approximately 878 flu shots were given this year compared to almost 670 in 2005.

The countywide blood pressure screening program always draws a large number of participants yearly.  All of these services offered under public health are vital in protecting the health of our county population.
