Home Health & Hospice Care

Caring for someone medically outside the traditional hospital setting is not a new idea. Well before modern medicine, people were cared for at home out of necessity. Caretakers of past generations usually consisted of family members or friends. Today, however, there are more options available, depending on the needs of the individual and family.

Hospice Philosophy

Harrison County Hospice will provide high quality care in the hope that the terminally ill will live as comfortable and full a life as is possible until they die.  Our goal is to provide the services necessary to allow patients to remain in the home with family and friends and to die with dignity and peace.  Services will be provided to all residents of the service area regardless of the ability to pay.

Hospice History

Harrison County Hospice program began in the fall of 1993, and to date has served 220 clients and their families.  In 2006, 693 visits were made to 31 clients, most of which reside in Harrison County.  The hospice team views the patient and their family as one unit of care.  Bereavement services begin at the time of death and are continued for a full year following the client’s death.  These services are provided under the direction of the social worker.

Volunteers are a vital part of the hospice program.  Harrison County Hospice currently has 7 volunteers devoted to patient and family support.  Volunteers not only provide direct or indirect care, and regular visits to the patients, but they also participate in other activities such as a wide variety of educational in-services and other self-developmental opportunities.

Hospice also provides Chaplain services.  Our Chaplains not only provide spiritual support for the patients and families, but also work with the staff in dealing with the comfort and concerns of loss and terminal illness.
